Framing & Care for Artwork
What is the difference between acid-free and regular mats?
Acid Free mats are 100% acid free in the core and back of the mat. Anything touching your artwork will be acid free. Regular mats are 90% acid free. Over time, acid can "eat" into the artwork causing brown spots.

What kind of glass should I use to frame my art?
The type of glass depends on the type of artwork and where the piece will be hung. Union Frame recommends using Plexi-glass for high-end and/or original artwork, as this will cause minimal damage if the picture falls or is dropped. Artwork that is exposed to a lot of sunlight should be framed with UltraViolet (UV) glass which helps to reduce fading of the image. Artwork that gets a lot of overhead light may benefit from non-glare glass. Standard glass is more economical than the specialty glass, however, the benefits may outweigh the added costs if your artwork is sentimental, one-of a kind, a limited edition or very valuable. If possible, it’s always best to hang artwork in locations that offer protection from the damaging effects of heat, moisture and light.

How do I clean my framed art?
Clean the surface regularly with a proper glass cleaner. For Plexi-glass, plex cleaner is available. For UV glass, use only non-ammonia based cleaners. Avoid using all-purpose cleaners, disinfectants, or any cleaner that contains waxes, pumice or harsh detergents. Spray the cleaner onto a soft cloth first, to avoid pooling and damage to the frame mat and art, and wipe either vertically or horizontally.

How do I hang my picture?
Union Frame provides wall hooks for every piece of artwork we frame. These hooks are made for dry wall or wood walls. For dry wall, it is recommended that you find the stud to hang your hook from, especially for heavier pictures. If you plan to hang your picture on a concrete wall, you will need to purchase the appropriate concrete wall hook from a local hardware store.
